Of the courses we played during our 2022 weekend at Lakewood Shores Golf Resort , The Serradella was easily my favorite.
And it wasn’t even close.
We had come over to the Sunrise Side for a golf weekend in Oscoda and played both Serradella and The Blackshire, along with spending some time on the Wee Links.
Blackshire wasn’t really my style.
Serradella was a completely different story.
I really liked this course.
One of the things that struck me as we made our way around was how much thought had obviously gone into Serradella over the years. There were flower beds throughout the course, landscaping around the holes, and little touches that told you this had once been a course someone took a great deal of pride in showing off.
By the time we played it in 2022, some of that was showing its age.
But you could still see it.
And I think that’s part of why I enjoyed Serradella so much.
There was personality here.
I found myself imagining what the course must have looked like when all those flower beds were full and everything was at its best. You don’t put that kind of landscaping throughout a golf course unless you’re trying to create something golfers will remember.
Even without everything looking as polished as it probably once did, I enjoyed the layout and had fun playing the course.
That’s really what matters to me.
I don’t need everything to be fancy. Give me an interesting course where I enjoy the round and find myself looking around as I make my way from hole to hole, and I’m pretty happy.
Serradella did that.
Our visit was in 2022, and Lakewood Shores has been through quite a bit since then. Work has been underway to improve the golf courses, and sadly, the clubhouse and restaurant we visited during our stay were later lost to a fire.
So the pictures below are very much a snapshot of the Serradella we experienced in 2022.
I’d actually like to see this one again someday.
Not just to see what has changed, but because underneath the areas that needed a little attention, I thought there was a really enjoyable golf course.
Sometimes you can tell a place has a story.
Serradella felt like one of those places.
And I hope some of those flower beds get another chance to show off again someday. ⛳
