The first time I pulled into Virginia Beach National Golf Club, I remember thinking this didn’t look much like a public golf course.
You come down a long driveway and arrive at this large brick, Colonial style clubhouse with big columns out front.
It has a very stately Southern look.
You half expect someone to come out and ask whether you’re a member.
Nope.
Virginia Beach National is open to the public.
This was one of the earlier courses I played after my son moved to Virginia, and on our first visit we had one of the earliest tee times available.
That was intentional.
Virginia Beach can get a little warm during golf season.
Okay, a lot warm.
Getting out early meant cooler temperatures, but it also meant we were dealing with plenty of morning dew.
That’s when I saw something I’d never seen on a golf course before.
The grounds crew was using a machine on the greens that looked a little like a paddle style snowblower. Instead of moving snow, it was knocking the dew off the grass.
And it worked beautifully.
One pass and the green was ready to go.
I was fascinated.
Apparently these are the things you start paying attention to when you’ve spent enough time on golf courses.
The course itself was originally designed by Pete Dye, the same architect behind some pretty famous golf courses, including TPC Sawgrass and Whistling Straits.
Fortunately, Virginia Beach National didn’t make me feel like I needed to be playing in a PGA tournament to survive the round.
We had fun.
It’s another Virginia Beach course I always say I want to get back to, but it doesn’t happen nearly as often as I’d like.
Location is usually the problem.
When we’re visiting the Virginia kids, we’re trying to fit golf around family plans, and courses closer to my son’s house tend to win.
Every time we’re planning another trip, though, Virginia Beach National comes up.
“We should play there again.”
And then somehow we don’t.
One of these trips we’re actually going to follow through.
Because between that impressive clubhouse, a course I enjoyed, and one of my favorite random grounds crew memories, Virginia Beach National has definitely earned another round.
Preferably early.
I’ve learned my lesson about golfing in the Virginia heat. ⛳
