Timber Wolf Golf Course Photos

If you’ve driven M 72 between Grayling and Kalkaska, you’ve probably passed Timber Wolf Golf Course.

There’s a sign along the road, a parking lot, and what looks like an old farmhouse.

That’s about it.

It’s quaint, unassuming, and very easy to drive past without giving it much thought.

Guy remembers playing Timber Wolf when it first opened and had heard various things about it over the years. Nothing that ever made us say, “We HAVE to go play Timber Wolf.”

Then one of his coworkers started talking about it.

A lot.

He loved the course, but what he really kept talking about were the people and how much he enjoyed going there.

Eventually, my curiosity got the better of me.

It was a sunny afternoon, I had nobody to golf with, and Kalkaska was only about a 45 minute drive.

Why not?

So I grabbed my clubs and headed to Timber Wolf by myself.

I’m really glad I did.

There’s nothing particularly fancy about Timber Wolf, and I don’t mean that as a criticism.

Actually, I think that’s part of its charm.

The course was fun, the atmosphere was relaxed, the people were friendly, and the price was hard to beat. When I played, 18 holes with a cart was $45. For those of us 65 or older you get another $5 off and a hot dog.

Golf and a hot dog?

Now we’re talking.

I headed out by myself and eventually caught up with two guys playing in front of me.

I golf pretty fast when I’m alone, so this happens a lot.

I’m also very conscious about not making the group ahead feel like I’m pushing them. I hate having somebody riding me from behind when I’m golfing, so I try not to be that golfer.

I’ll hang back, stay out of sight when I can, and enjoy being outside.

It was a beautiful sunny day.

I wasn’t in any hurry.

At the turn, I ran into the two guys in the clubhouse. They apologized for holding me up, and I assured them they weren’t. I told them I was perfectly happy and they shouldn’t feel rushed because of me.

They grabbed some lunch and headed toward the patio.

I refilled my drink and started back toward my cart.

As I was leaving, they stopped me.

We talked a little more, and then they asked if I’d like to join them for the back nine.

Sure.

Why not?

So my solo round became a threesome.

As we played, I learned they had lived in the Bellaire area for many years and, funny enough, they had also just recently discovered Timber Wolf.

They had played it the previous week, had such a good time that they came back and played it again.

I totally understood why.

There’s just something about Timber Wolf.

It isn’t trying to impress you.

You pull into what feels a little like someone’s farmhouse, grab your clubs, pay a reasonable price, and go play golf.

And somewhere along the way, you might meet a couple of strangers and end up playing nine holes with them.

To me, that’s part of what makes golf fun.

I went to Timber Wolf that afternoon because I was curious about a course Guy’s coworker wouldn’t stop talking about.

I left understanding why he kept talking about it.

And now Guy, who hasn’t played Timber Wolf in more than 20 years, is anxious to see it again.

So it’s on our list.

Something tells me my first round at Timber Wolf won’t be my last. ⛳

I’ll share more about my visit to Timber Wolf in an upcoming Golf Up North Newsletter.
