Some golf courses become favorites because they’re spectacular.
Others become favorites because they’re simply comfortable.
Stumpy Lake Golf Course has become one of those courses for me.
We play it on most of our trips to Virginia Beach, partly because it’s not far from my son’s house and partly because we can usually find a decent tee time somewhere in our schedule.
But mostly we keep going back because we have fun there.
It’s become familiar.
When we’re planning a trip to visit the Virginia kids and start talking about where we might golf, Stumpy Lake is usually part of the conversation.
The course has been around since 1958 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones. What makes the setting particularly interesting is that you’re playing in the middle of the Stumpy Lake Natural Area, with a large lake and hundreds of acres of woods and wetlands surrounding you.
It definitely doesn’t feel like you’re golfing in the middle of Virginia Beach.
There is plenty of nature around, which is always something I enjoy on a golf course.
Although after my New Orleans alligator experience, I’ve learned that sometimes it’s best not to investigate the nature too closely.
Stumpy Lake is an older municipal course, and I mean that in a good way. It has that established feel you get from a course that’s been part of the community for decades.
We’ve always found it well maintained, and the clubhouse and staff have consistently been great whenever we’ve played.
It’s also just a fun course.
There are enough challenges to keep things interesting without making me wonder why I ever took up golf in the first place.
That’s a pretty good balance for my game.
Over the years, we’ve played several courses around Virginia Beach, but Stumpy Lake is the one we seem to return to most often.
It’s convenient.
It’s friendly.
It’s a course we know we’ll enjoy.
And when you’re trying to squeeze golf into a trip that’s really supposed to be about visiting your kids, having a reliable favorite close by is pretty darn useful.
At this point, a trip to Virginia Beach without at least considering a round at Stumpy Lake would feel a little strange.
Fortunately, we usually manage to find room for one. ⛳
