Our 2015 trip to Shanty Creek resort was my first real golf weekend.
Apparently nobody thought easing me into the concept was necessary.
We arrived Thursday afternoon, got settled in, and on Friday morning the golfing began.
The plan for the day?
The Summit followed by Schuss Mountain.
Thirty six holes.
Remember, I was still pretty new to golf at this point.
What could possibly go wrong?
Schuss Mountain was our second 18 of the day, and I’ll admit that more than a decade later, I don’t remember a lot of specifics about the round.
Back then, Golf Up North didn’t exist. I wasn’t taking notes about course conditions, photographing every hole sign, or making sure I had a picture from every tee box.
I was just golfing.
And after already playing 18 holes earlier that day, I was probably also getting a little tired.
Schuss Mountain was designed by Warner Bowen and winds through the rolling, wooded terrain around the resort. Looking back at the pictures now, I wish I had paid more attention to everything around me.
At the time, I was probably concentrating more on making contact with the golf ball.
Priorities.
What I do remember is that we had a great time.
That entire weekend was really my introduction to the golf trips that would eventually become such a big part of our lives. We’d get up, play golf, grab something to eat, talk about golf, and then get ready to do it all over again.
Friday was The Summit and Schuss Mountain.
Saturday would bring Cedar River and The Legend.
Four courses in two days.
For someone still learning the game, that was a lot of golf.
Apparently it didn’t scare me away.
These pictures aren’t nearly as complete as the galleries we put together today, but that’s part of what makes them fun to look back on.
I wasn’t thinking about Golf Up North.
I wasn’t documenting Schuss Mountain for a website.
I was simply on my first golf weekend, playing my second round of the day, and discovering that spending an entire weekend doing little more than golfing sounded like a pretty good idea.
Turns out, it still does. ⛳
