Whenever we’re in Virginia Beach visiting the kids, there’s a pretty good chance we’re going to try to squeeze in at least one round of golf.
Red Wing Lake Golf Course is one of my favorites.
Unfortunately, it’s also one I don’t get to play nearly as often as I’d like.
Red Wing Lake is a little farther from my son’s house than some of the other courses we play, and when we’re visiting, there always seems to be something going on. Family plans, places to be, people to see, and us trying to figure out whether we can somehow fit 18 holes into the middle of it all.
Sometimes we can.
Sometimes Red Wing Lake has to wait until the next trip.
When we do get there, though, I always enjoy it.
I really like the flow of this course. It’s challenging enough that I have to think about what I’m doing, but it doesn’t beat me up for 18 holes.
That’s an important distinction.
I don’t mind a golf course making me work a little. I just prefer that it occasionally gives me a fighting chance.
Red Wing Lake does.
The course was originally designed by George W. Cobb and has since undergone renovations, but what matters most to me is simply that it’s fun to play. The setting is beautiful, the holes keep things interesting, and I’ve always found the staff to be friendly.
It also tends to be busy.
Apparently I’m not the only one who likes it.
That’s another reason getting a round in during one of our Virginia visits can be tricky. We’re usually working around family plans and trying to squeeze golf into whatever opening we can find.
And let’s be honest.
When I’m visiting the Virginia kids, golf isn’t supposed to be the reason for the trip.
It’s just a very nice bonus.
Over the years, we’ve played several courses around Virginia Beach, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know golf outside of Northern Michigan.
But Red Wing Lake remains one of the courses I look forward to playing whenever we can make the timing work.
It’s challenging.
It’s playable for my game.
It’s beautiful.
And I always have fun there.
That’s really all I need from a golf course.
Now I just need the Virginia kids to start leaving bigger openings in my schedule when I visit. ⛳
