Northport Creek Golf Course. was one of those courses we kept hearing good things about.
Eventually, you hear enough people say, “You need to play there,” and you figure it’s probably time to listen.
So in early one September, we headed up the Leelanau Peninsula to Northport to see for ourselves.
They were right.
Northport Creek is a nine hole course, and we really enjoyed playing it. It’s friendly, relaxed, and fits beautifully into the surrounding landscape. The course was designed by Jerry Matthews, who used the natural contours of the former farmland to help shape the holes.
Nothing about it feels like it was forced into the property.
But there’s something else that makes Northport Creek pretty special.
It’s solar powered.
When Northport Creek opened in July 2014, it was recognized as the first golf course in the United States designed and built to be completely powered by solar energy.
That’s a pretty impressive distinction for a little nine hole golf course tucked away near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula.
And I like that it isn’t something that takes over the golf experience. You’re still there to play golf. The course just happens to be doing something pretty innovative behind the scenes while you’re playing it.
Our experience matched most of what we’d heard before we arrived. The people we encountered were friendly, the atmosphere was comfortable, and we simply had a fun round.
There is one thing worth knowing before you head out.
Northport Creek doesn’t sell alcohol, but golfers are allowed to bring their own. So if you’d like something in the cooler during your round, bring it with you. They even had a small ice machine available when we played.
It’s a little detail, but it’s good information to have before you’re standing in the clubhouse wishing you’d stopped somewhere along the way.
Northport Creek isn’t a big resort course. It isn’t trying to be.
It’s a really enjoyable nine holes in a beautiful corner of Northern Michigan, with an interesting story and a personality all its own.
We had heard nothing but good things before we played it.
Now we’re among the people saying them.
And if you need one more reason to feel good about your round, apparently even the electricity running the place is having a sunny day. ⛳
