Northern Michigan University’s Golf Course had been on my bucket list for a few years, so when a recent trip to Marquette for my daughter’s wedding gave us the opportunity to finally play it, we weren’t going to pass it up.
I actually had a connection to the course long before we ever teed it up.
Back in 2021, when Golf Up North was just getting started, I reached out to several golf courses in the Upper Peninsula with questions about how the harsh U.P. winters affect their courses and what superintendents do to protect them during those long, cold months. This was for our October 2021 Newsletter.
The only person who responded was Mike Osier, Superintendent at Northern Michigan University’s Golf Course.
And Mike didn’t just send me a quick response. He took the time to provide thoughtful, in depth answers to every one of my questions. I’ve remembered that ever since. Mad respect for Mike and his willingness to help out a brand new golf website when there really wasn’t anything in it for him.
One of the highlights of finally getting to NMU was having the chance to meet Mike in person. After remembering how kind and helpful he had been to me back in 2021, I was hoping I’d get the opportunity to say hello. Sure enough, Mike was every bit as nice in person as I expected him to be. It was great to finally put a face with the name and thank him for the help he gave us when Golf Up North was just getting started.
So, needless to say, I was looking forward to finally seeing the course he takes care of.
I had also heard through the grapevine that higher handicap golfers tend to enjoy NMU because the course can be fairly forgiving.
Apparently the course didn’t get that memo when I played.
I had one of those rounds where the forgiveness seemed to be reserved for somebody else. Guy, who carries a much lower handicap than I do, had a much better day and really enjoyed the course.
Despite what my scorecard may have had to say about it, I was glad to finally check Northern Michigan University’s Golf Course off the bucket list. It was fun to see a course I had been curious about for years, and meeting Mike made the day that much more special.
And, as always, we took plenty of pictures along the way. Below you’ll find each hole sign along with the view from the tee box, so you can get a feel for what it’s like to make your way around NMU’s course.
