Mistwood Golf Course in Lake Ann is one I’ve struggled a little with when deciding what to write.
We played it over Labor Day weekend in 2023, and our experience was definitely mixed.
Mistwood has 27 holes divided into three nines, Red, White, and Blue. We played the Red and Blue courses that day.
At least I think we always knew which one we were playing.
One of our biggest issues was simply finding our way around.
Several holes were missing signs, and there were places where it wasn’t particularly clear whether we were supposed to be heading toward the Red, White, or Blue course.
Fortunately, I had Guy.
He had played Mistwood several times before and knew his way around. Without him, there’s a pretty good chance I’d still be wandering around Lake Ann looking for the next tee box.
That made the lack of signage especially noticeable to me. When you’re playing a course for the first time, you shouldn’t need a tour guide to figure out where the next hole is.
Our first impression inside was a little mixed too. The gentleman who took our money wasn’t exactly having his friendliest day.
The bartender, on the other hand, was great.
Sometimes that’s just people being people. Everyone has an off day, so I’m not going to judge an entire golf course based on one interaction.
What surprised us more was how quiet the place was.
This was Labor Day weekend in Northern Michigan, not exactly a slow time for tourism, and there were very few golfers around.
By the time we finished, I had mixed feelings about Mistwood.
There were things I liked about the course itself, and having three different nines gives the property some interesting possibilities. But the missing signage, confusing routing, and overall experience didn’t match what we had paid to play.
At the time, I thought it was expensive for what we got ($78 18 holes with cart).
Three years later, that’s an important distinction.
Our pictures and comments are from our 2023 round. They aren’t necessarily a reflection of what you’ll find at Mistwood today.
Current pricing is considerably less than what we paid that Labor Day weekend, and recent golfer reviews are a mixture of people enjoying the value and layout and others mentioning course condition issues.
That tells me Mistwood may still be a work in progress.
Would I go back?
I think I would.
Enough time has passed that I’d be curious to see what has changed, especially at the current price. I’d also like to play the White nine and get another look at Red and Blue.
And this time, hopefully, I won’t need Guy to tell me which direction we’re going.
Although knowing me, having Guy along as the navigator probably isn’t a bad idea regardless. ⛳
