Some golf courses just make it easy to have a good day.
Missaukee Golf Club was one of those courses for us.
We played in the middle of July with two of my sons and Arianna, my daughter in law and one of the owners of Golf Up North. With that group, I was already pretty confident we were going to have a fun day.
Missaukee is located between Lake City and McBain and has been around since 1970. The course rolls through a mix of hardwoods with ponds and a creek coming into play along the way.
It’s a very comfortable Northern Michigan golf course.
They describe the course as user friendly, and based on my round, I’m not going to argue with them.
I broke 100 that day, which always makes me a little more fond of a golf course.
Funny how that works.
That doesn’t mean Missaukee is a pushover. There are trees, water, and plenty of opportunities to make golf more difficult than it needs to be.
I’m pretty good at that part.
What also stood out during our visit was how friendly everyone was. The clubhouse and pro shop were clean, well stocked, and welcoming. It was one of those places where you immediately felt comfortable walking in.
Then we learned about the brats.
This is important.
Missaukee serves Ebels brats, and we were told to call the clubhouse from the eighth hole if we wanted them ready when we made the turn.
Now that is a golf course amenity I can appreciate.
We called ahead.
The brats were ready.
The system worked beautifully.
And if the jalapeño brat is available when you play, get one.
Trust me on this.
The whole day was simply fun. I was golfing with family, we enjoyed the course, the staff treated us well, lunch was waiting at the turn, and I managed to put together a pretty darn good round.
Missaukee may not be one of the big resort names that gets talked about every time someone mentions Northern Michigan golf.
That’s okay.
Sometimes you don’t need spectacular or fancy.
You just need a golf course where you enjoy the round, enjoy the people you’re playing with, and leave thinking you’d happily come back.
Missaukee was that kind of course for us.
And the jalapeño brat didn’t hurt. ⛳
