There are plenty of ways to tell whether someone enjoyed a golf course.
The guys gave Mackinaw Club Golf Course a pretty convincing review.
They finished 18 holes.
Then they went back inside, paid for another 18, and played the whole thing again.
I’d say they liked it.
Mackinaw Club was the second stop on the guys’ 2021 Northern Michigan golf weekend. They started at Emerald Vale Golf Course, headed north to Mackinaw Club Golf Golf Course in Carp Lake, and eventually crossed the bridge to play Wild Bluff Golf Course in the Upper Peninsula.
Apparently nobody told them a golf weekend was supposed to include some rest.
Mackinaw Club is just a few minutes south of Mackinaw City, and the course was designed by Jerry Matthews. From everything I heard when the guys returned, this one was a big hit.
They loved the course.
Not “that was pretty good” or “we’d play it again someday.”
They liked it enough that when the first round ended, nobody was ready to leave.
So they played another one.
Thirty six holes in one day isn’t something you do at a course you’re merely tolerating.
One thing I also like about Mackinaw Club is that they recognize where they’re located. This is a vacation area, and they take a more relaxed approach to golf attire than some courses.
I appreciate that.
Golf has traditions, and there’s nothing wrong with looking like you belong on a golf course. But Northern Michigan is also full of people on vacation who might decide at breakfast that playing golf sounds like a pretty good way to spend the afternoon.
That relaxed attitude carries over in other ways too. Mackinaw Club does not have a liquor license, but golfers are allowed to bring their own beverages onto the course. They have soft drinks, snacks, ice, and coolers available at the clubhouse, so you can get yourself set before heading out.
Between the relaxed dress code and the ability to bring your own refreshments, Mackinaw Club seems to understand its audience. You’re in Northern Michigan, you’re probably on vacation, and you’re there to enjoy a round of golf.
Or, in the guys’ case, two rounds.
Mackinaw Club seems to understand that golf can be taken seriously without taking everything about golf quite so seriously.
Unfortunately, this was another guys’ trip where the Golf Up North photography department wasn’t exactly operating at peak efficiency.
We have some pictures.
Not enough pictures.
Considering they played 36 holes, you’d think somebody could have remembered to take a few more.
Apparently they were too busy golfing.
And considering how much they enjoyed Mackinaw Club, I’ll give them a pass on this one.
Any course that convinces a group of guys to finish 18 holes and immediately sign up for 18 more must be doing something right. ⛳
