Most of the courses on Golf Up North are places we’ve visited.
Elmbrook is different.
Elmbrook Golf Course is our home course.
Guy has played in a league here for more than 30 years, we’re members, and during golf season I’m usually at Elmbrook at least once a week. Sometimes more.
So trying to write about Elmbrook the same way I write about a course we’ve played once doesn’t really work.
I’ve been golfing here since I started playing in 2015. I’ve had good rounds here, bad rounds, league nights, outings, Father’s Day rounds, and plenty of those quick rounds where you squeeze in as many holes as you can before running out of daylight.
I know the holes.
I know where I should hit the ball.
Those two things don’t always have anything to do with each other.
Over the years, Elmbrook has also become one of those places where I seem to always have my phone out taking a picture of something.
Sometimes it’s the course itself. Sometimes the light is hitting a hole just right. Sometimes I actually hit a drive far enough that I feel photographic evidence is necessary.
And sometimes a Blue Angel flies overhead.
That’s one of the fun things about playing a course over and over again. You would think eventually you’d stop noticing the scenery, but I haven’t. There are still days when I’ll be standing somewhere on Elmbrook and think, That’s a pretty great view.
There are also a lot of Golf Up North memories tied to this course.
Elmbrook was supposed to be the site of the final showdown for the infamous Bet of 2022. Unfortunately, the guys had a little too much fun at Nelly’s the night before and decided perhaps that particular competition should be postponed.
Probably one of their wiser golf decisions.
We’ve also participated in and sponsored a hole at the Trojan Football Boosters Outing here, and over the years there have been plenty of other outings and rounds with family and friends.
Elmbrook has also become the course where we take family when they want to golf with us.
When everyone came to Northern Michigan from Germany and England for Ronessa and Dom’s wedding, this is where we brought Dom’s family to play. There was something pretty special about sharing our home course with family who had traveled all that way to be here.
That same summer, Elmbrook was also where Anna and Bray played their first full 18 holes and Bray got his first par. They had golfed before, but making it through all 18 is a milestone, especially when you’re young. Getting to share that with them at the course where we spend so much of our own time made it even better.
Those are the kinds of memories that have made Elmbrook more than just the course where we happen to have a membership. Birthdays, Father’s Day rounds, outings, family visits, league nights, kids and grandkids learning the game, and plenty of ordinary rounds that somehow become memories anyway.
Somewhere along the way, Elmbrook became part of our family’s golf story.
More recently, we talked about some of Elmbrook’s history and our Father’s Day round in our July 2026 Newsletter.
That’s why this picture gallery is different from most of the others on Golf Up North.
These aren’t pictures from one round.
They’re pictures from years of rounds.
Some go all the way back to when I started golfing in 2015. Others are much more recent. Together, they show a course we’ve watched change through different seasons and different years, different owners and one that has been part of our lives for a very long time.
I have a long list of Northern Michigan golf courses I still want to play. I’m always looking for the next course, the next road trip, or the next excuse to throw the clubs in the car.
But it’s pretty nice knowing that when the adventure is over, Elmbrook is still waiting for us back home.
And I’ll probably be there again next week. ⛳
