Sometimes you don’t need to travel very far to find a golf course you’ve been overlooking.
We headed to Elk Rapids one June to visit a friend and, since we were already there, decided we might as well bring the golf clubs along and check out the local nine hole course.
Good decision.
Elk Rapid Golf Club sits right along the shores of Elk Lake, and we really enjoyed this one. It’s a beautiful setting and has that comfortable, established feel you expect from a private club without being completely off limits to the rest of us.
The club is private, but public play is welcome, which gives you the opportunity to experience a course you might otherwise assume you couldn’t get on.
There are a few differences from playing your typical public course. Clubhouse access is reserved for members and guests accompanied by a member, which also applies if you’re looking to grab a beverage.
Fortunately, finding a friendly member willing to accompany you inside didn’t seem to be much of a problem.

That’s the kind of teamwork I can get behind.
The course itself is very walkable. Carts are available, but don’t be surprised if you see more golfers walking than riding. It’s only nine holes, the layout lends itself nicely to walking, and there is something about strolling around a golf course along Elk Lake that just feels right.
We went into the round simply thinking we’d try the local course while we were visiting a friend.
We left really glad we did.
Elk Rapids Golf Club has a lot of the things I enjoy about Northern Michigan golf. It’s scenic, relaxed, friendly, and has its own personality. It doesn’t need to be a big resort course or an all day golf adventure to be memorable.
Sometimes nine holes by the lake is plenty.
Although if someone wants to invite me back for another nine and provide clubhouse access afterward, I certainly wouldn’t turn them down. ⛳
