Crystal Lake Golf Course Photos
Crystal Lake Golf Course in Beulah has become one of those courses I am always happy to play.
We first played it on a busy Saturday in July, which can tell you a lot about how a golf course is run. The tee sheet was full, there was plenty happening around the clubhouse, and yet everything just seemed to move the way it was supposed to.
That’s something I’ve noticed every time I’ve been back.
Crystal Lake hosts a lot of golf outings, and I played there again last year as part of a charity outing. They know how to handle a crowd. Even when there is an outing on the course and a wedding happening at the same time, somehow everything keeps moving along.
I think a lot of that comes from the people running the place.
The owner is present, hands on, and involved, and it shows. The staff has always been incredibly friendly, and Crystal Lake is easily one of the more welcoming courses I’ve played.
The clubhouse isn’t fancy, and honestly, it doesn’t need to be. The food is good, the drinks are good, the people are friendly, and the course is well cared for.
Give me that combination any day.
The course itself rolls through some beautiful Benzie County terrain with views overlooking Crystal Lake. There are some generous fairways, but don’t mistake that for the course being a pushover. The rolling terrain and greens can definitely make you work for your score.
I know this from experience.
On one hole, I found myself in a greenside bunker and hit what I thought was a beautiful sand shot. The ball came out exactly the way I wanted, landed right next to the pin, and for one brief, glorious moment I was feeling pretty good about myself.
Then it kept rolling.
And rolling.
Right down the other side of the green and into the pond.
Golf has a wonderful way of keeping you humble.
I did manage to finish the round with a par on 18, though, so we’re going to consider that redemption and conveniently focus on how the round ended.
I’ve played Crystal Lake more than once now, and there is a reason I enjoy going back. It’s a fun golf course, but just as importantly, it’s a friendly place that always seems to be well run.
Sometimes the courses you remember most aren’t the fanciest ones.
They’re the ones where you enjoy the golf, like the people, and leave looking forward to coming back.
Crystal Lake is one of those courses for me. ⛳
