Shanty Creek Resort – Cedar River Golf Course Photos

These pictures go way back.

In 2015, we headed to Shanty Creek resort for what was my first real golf weekend.

And apparently we decided to ease me into golf weekends by playing four courses.

Nothing excessive about that.

We arrived late Thursday, got settled in, and then started golfing Friday morning. Over the course of the weekend we played The Summit, Schuss Mountain, Cedar River, and The Legend before finally heading home Sunday.

Cedar River was our first round on Saturday.

I’ll be completely honest.

I don’t remember a lot of specifics about this round.

Golf Up North didn’t exist yet. I wasn’t taking notes, photographing every hole sign, or thinking about what I might someday write about the course.

I was just there to golf.

And have fun.

We definitely accomplished that.

Cedar River was designed by Tom Weiskopf and was his first course design in Michigan. He used the natural Northern Michigan terrain, including the hills and land shaped by glaciers, to create the course.

Would I have appreciated any of that in 2015?

Probably not.

I was still pretty new to golf. My thoughts were likely much more along the lines of, Where am I supposed to hit this? and Please don’t go in the woods.

What I do remember about that weekend is how much fun we had.

We golfed.

A lot.

We stayed at the resort, got up the next morning, golfed some more, and somewhere along the way I started discovering just how much I enjoyed golf trips.

Looking back now, that’s what makes these old Shanty Creek pictures special to me.

They’re from before Golf Up North.

Before I started documenting every course.

Before I knew I’d eventually spend so much of my time traveling around Northern Michigan with golf clubs and a camera.

I wish I had taken more pictures.

I wish I remembered more about Cedar River.

But maybe that’s okay.

Back then I wasn’t trying to document the round.

I was just enjoying it.

And apparently I enjoyed it enough that I’m still doing this more than a decade later. ⛳
