Not every course we feature on Golf Up North is one you can simply call up and book a tee time.
Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club in Virginia Beach is one of those courses.
One of our sons belongs to the club, which gave us the opportunity to play a round with him. It was also my first time playing a private golf course, so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.
As it turns out, I really enjoyed the experience.
The course was beautiful, and everyone we encountered, from the staff to the members, was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Sometimes you wonder if you’re going to feel a little out of place walking into a private club for the first time. I never felt that way at Cavalier.
There was also something completely new to me waiting in the golf cart.
GPS.
Remember, this was before I had played as many courses as I have today, so a golf cart telling me distances and giving me information about the hole seemed pretty darn impressive.
No guessing how far I was from the green. No trying to find a sprinkler head with a yardage marker. The information was sitting right there in front of me.
Of course, knowing the correct yardage and actually hitting the ball that distance are two entirely different things.
Technology can only do so much.
Cavalier also has an interesting place in golf course history. The course was designed by Charles Banks, and it is one of only a small number of his courses still around today. That wasn’t something I fully appreciated when we played it, but looking back, it makes the opportunity to play there even more special.
More than anything, though, I remember it as a fun day playing golf with our son at a course I probably never would have experienced otherwise.
This gallery is a little light on pictures compared with some of our newer course pages. Back then, I wasn’t nearly as disciplined about documenting every hole from the tee box.
Apparently I was too busy being impressed by the golf cart.
I’ve gotten better.
At taking pictures, anyway.
