Black Lake Golf Club in Onaway was one of the stops on the guys’ 2023 golf trip as they made their way toward Drummond Island.
And this was one they came home talking about.
The guys stayed at the UAW Black Lake property and had nothing but good things to say about the accommodations and, more importantly for our purposes, the golf course.
Black Lake was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 2000. The course winds through heavily wooded Northern Michigan terrain, and the guys loved it.
Unfortunately, they didn’t take nearly enough pictures.
We’ve already established that sending the guys on a golf trip and expecting them to properly document 18 holes might have been a little optimistic on my part.
There was one part of the Black Lake experience they definitely remembered, though.
The parking lot.
Black Lake is part of the UAW’s Walter and May Reuther Family Education Center, and they have a vehicle policy you probably won’t encounter at many golf resorts. Only union made vehicles built in the United States or Canada are allowed to remain onsite. Vehicles that don’t meet those requirements have to be parked in a lot outside the entrance.
Guess whose group had a vehicle that didn’t qualify?
One of the guys got the privilege of using the outside parking lot.
The rule feels a little unusual these days, when figuring out exactly where a vehicle was built can require more homework than figuring out where to aim your tee shot.
But this is a UAW property.
No sense arriving for a golf weekend and picking a fight with the union over the parking lot. 🙂
Parking adventures aside, the important part is that the guys spoke very highly of Black Lake. They loved the course, enjoyed the accommodations, and came home saying it was one they would gladly play again.
And since their picture taking skills left something to be desired, perhaps another trip is necessary.
