Sometimes a golf course deserves a second round.
Our first visit to Antioch Hills Golf Club in Mesick was a bit of a mixed bag. We liked the course itself and could see the improvements that had been made since its days as Briar North. The course was well maintained, the holes gave us plenty to think about, and we could tell there were good things happening here.
Unfortunately, pace of play was an issue that day. It was a holiday, the course was busy, and things just never seemed to get moving. We left saying that we wanted to come back because we had a feeling our experience that day might not be a fair representation of Antioch Hills.
So we did.
And we are very glad we gave it another shot.
Our second visit was a completely different experience. Pace of play was right where it should be, the course was in great shape, and we were able to simply enjoy the round.
That second visit gave us a much better appreciation for Antioch Hills. It is always nice when you return to a course and find that whatever frustrated you the first time was just one of those days. Anyone who plays enough golf knows they happen.
It also reinforced something we noticed during our first visit. A lot of work has gone into this course over the years. Those efforts show, and Antioch Hills has become a course we are happy to have in our Northern Michigan golf lineup.
Our original plan was to come back, give it another try, and update this page.
Consider it updated.
And this time, we left talking about the golf instead of how long it took to play it. That is always a good sign.
