Caberfae Peaks Golf Course Photos

Every once in a while, you play a course that completely catches you off guard.

Caberfae Peaks Golf Course was one of those courses for us.

I had been to Caberfae before, but it had been more than 20 years, and back then there were skis involved, not golf clubs. In fact, until we decided to play there, I didn’t even know Caberfae had a golf course.

Turns out, the course was there back when I was skiing. I apparently just wasn’t paying attention.

We met up with our son Alex, who was staying at his cabin nearby, and headed to Caberfae for a round. The Peaks Course is nine holes, so we played it twice to get our 18 in.

I’ll admit, my expectations weren’t particularly high.

I knew Caberfae as a ski hill. I figured the golf course would be a nice little extra for the warmer months. Maybe a decent nine holes, have some fun with Alex, and call it a day.

I was wrong.

We thoroughly enjoyed this course.

The first thing that struck me was how secluded it felt. Once we got out on the course, we were surrounded by tall trees, wetlands, ravines, and plenty of Northern Michigan scenery. Some of the holes require you to think a little bit about where you’re going, too. This isn’t just nine holes sitting at the bottom of a ski hill.

That secluded feeling does come with one small catch. Cell service on the course was pretty much nonexistent for us.

At the time, my brilliant system for keeping track of our course pictures was to take a photo of each hole and email it to myself as we played. Normally, that worked just fine.

Caberfae had other plans.

With little to no cell service for most of the course, my emails never went through. I didn’t realize it until later, which is why this gallery is a little light on pictures.

I’ve since learned there are better ways to save golf course photos. Sometimes you have to learn these things the hard way.

On the plus side, if you’re looking for a round of golf where nobody can easily reach you, Caberfae has that going for it too.

Playing the same nine twice didn’t bother us either. In fact, I always find the second trip around a nine hole course interesting. You’ve already seen what each hole can do to you, so theoretically you should be smarter the second time.

Theoretically.

By the time we finished, Caberfae had gone from a course I barely knew existed to one we were already talking about playing again.

Actually, we want to do more than that.

We’d like to come back, stay at the resort for a weekend, and play the course a few times. Caberfae Peaks offers lodging right at the resort, with the golf course next to the lodge, so this one seems made for an easy golf getaway.

There are plenty of Northern Michigan golf courses that get a lot more attention than Caberfae Peaks. Maybe that’s part of what made this round so much fun.

We weren’t expecting much.

We found a sleeper.

And those are sometimes the most fun courses to discover. ⛳

n September we visited Caberfae Peaks Golf Course—a spot I hadn’t visited in 20+ years. We met up with Alex while he was at his up-mid cabin for 18 holes. The course is a 9 hole so you have to play it twice. My expectations were low: small-town ski lodge, decent greens at best. WRONG. The place had undergone a glow-up! From the updated clubhouse to the manicured grounds, it was a whole new vibe.

We wrote about Caberfae Peaks in our December 2024 issue. Make sure you don’t miss an issue by clicking on Golf Up North Newsletter and subscribing to our monthly newsletter.
