One of my favorite things about visiting our Virginia family is getting to golf with the kids and grandkids.
During our August 2026 visit, Patrick, Anna, Brayden, and I headed out for a round at Kempsville Greens Golf Course in Virginia Beach.
This was my first time playing Kempsville Greens, but Anna was already familiar with the place. She takes golf lessons there, so at least one of us knew what we were getting into.
And it wasn’t Grandma.
I really enjoyed this course. It had plenty of challenges, but it was fun to play, and I especially liked that they had junior tees for younger golfers.
That may not sound like a big deal, but when you’re golfing with kids, it makes a difference.
Instead of having to figure out where to move them up on each hole, they had their own tees. It made the round easier to manage and gave Anna and Bray a chance to play the course at distances that made sense for them.
And those two are getting pretty darn good at golf!
It’s been fun watching their games develop. Every time we play together, I notice how much more comfortable and confident they’re becoming on the course.
Of course, they’re still kids.
There are good shots, not so good shots, and the occasional reminder that golf requires a little patience.
Come to think of it, that pretty much describes my golf game too.
We had a wonderful time playing together, and I was really glad we chose Kempsville Greens.
The course was challenging enough to keep Patrick and me interested, while the junior tees made it a good experience for Anna and Bray.
That’s a combination I really appreciate.
Anna and I were back at Kempsville Greens the following day for her golf lesson, so I got to spend a little more time at the facility.
It’s nice seeing a course where junior golf is part of the experience, not just something kids are expected to figure out while playing alongside adults.
One thing I should mention about Kempsville Greens is the Canada geese.
There are a LOT of them.
And apparently, they have absolutely no intention of moving out of your way.
I learned that the hard way on Hole 17 when I accidentally clipped one in the leg while driving the golf cart.
Oh, I felt terrible!
The poor thing limped for a little while, but thankfully, it recovered and seemed to be moving around normally again.
I’ve encountered plenty of wildlife on golf courses over the years, but this was a first for me.
So here’s a little advice if you’re playing Kempsville Greens.
Watch out for the geese.
Because apparently, they’re not watching out for you. ⛳
Now, I should mention that Anna and Bray have another reason for liking Kempsville Greens.
The burgers.
According to both of them, Kempsville Greens has the best burgers around.
That’s a pretty strong endorsement.
I haven’t independently verified their claim, but they seemed awfully confident about it.
And who am I to argue with two young golfers who clearly know what they like?
I judge golf courses by the condition of the greens, the layout, the people, and how much fun I had.
Anna and Bray apparently factor in the cheeseburger situation.
Fair enough.
Overall, Kempsville Greens was a really enjoyable surprise for me. I liked the course, appreciated the junior tees, and loved having another opportunity to golf with Patrick and the grandkids.
As usual, I took pictures of every hole, so you can follow along with our round in the gallery below.
I’m sure we’ll be back.
After all, Anna takes lessons there, the golf is fun, and according to my two youngest course reviewers, the burgers are worth the trip all by themselves.
Sounds like a pretty good reason to return. ⛳
